Hat & Turban Care Guide
Each piece that leaves the London atelier is made by hand to the highest standard. A little care between wears is all it takes to keep your hat or turban looking its absolute best.
Cleaning Your Hats & Headpieces
Structured hats, fascinators and headpieces should be kept dry. Do not wash or wear in the rain. If your piece picks up a mark, first test a non-fragranced baby wipe on a small area inside the hat or headpiece. If no discolouration occurs, very lightly dab the affected area to lift the mark. Always dab rather than rub, so as not to damage or dent the hat. Allow the piece to air-dry naturally afterwards.
Keep hats away from perfume, hairspray and cosmetics, which can stain or damage delicate fabrics, feathers and embellishments.
Cleaning Your Turbans
All turbans are hand-stitched and should be handled gently. Washing should be avoided where possible. Structured turbans in silk abaca or straw should be cared for in the same way as hats — spot-clean only, and do not wash or submerge. For soft turbans, if washing is absolutely necessary, follow the guides below using a mild hand-wash detergent.
Cotton jersey, jersey, Japanese cotton and tulle turbans
Hand-wash with care in cool water. Gently reposition the folds while damp. To reshape, make a head form from tissue paper inside a clear plastic bag and place the turban over it to dry. Avoid coloured or printed bags, as dye or ink can transfer to the fabric. For Japanese cotton, if creasing remains after drying, very gently hand-steam.
Lurex turbans
Very gently hand-wash in cool water. Reposition while damp. Do not use bleach. Lurex turbans can also be dry cleaned.
Velvet turbans
Very gently hand-wash in cool water and reposition while damp, or dry clean.
Silk satin and hammer silk turbans
Dry clean only.
Sparkle jersey turbans
Not suitable for washing. Gently dab with a non-fragranced baby wipe if needed. Please note that this may cause some glitter to come off the fabric.
Storage
How you store your hat between wears makes a real difference to its longevity. Keep all hats and headpieces in a cool, dark, dry place.
A hat box is the best option for structured pieces — it protects against dust, light and accidental crushing. Each Nerida Fraiman hat is delivered with tissue and packaging designed to support the piece, so use this as a guide for long-term storage. Pack the crown gently with tissue paper to help it keep its shape, and use tissue to support the hat within the box. Do not overpack or squash too much tissue around the piece, as this can damage delicate details just as easily as leaving them unsupported.
